    About the artist:
Oregon painter (1903-1981). Has work in the collections of Portland Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Smithsonian American art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Started as a WPA painter in Chicago and Washington DC in the 1930s. Moved to Eugene where he taught art at the University of Oregon until 1970 and influenced many young artists. His style changed as he grew artistically and traveled. (His paintings done in 1920s-early 1930s were influenced by American regionalist painters. After a trip to Europe on a Tiffany Foundation Fellowship in 1929-30, he became influenced by Cezanne and Matisse. He then moved on to social realism in the 1930s. In the 1940s-50s, his work became progressively more abstract, and his color palette was quite somber).
